Hands Off Cuba and Venezuela, Social Activists Demand

Havana, May 8, 2006. (ACN) Hands Off Cuba and Venezuela is the title of a seminar organized by representatives from worldwide progressive social movements in response to US rising hostility. The seminar will be presented in the alternative summit to the Fourth EU-Latin America/Caribbean Summit running from May 11 and 12 in Austria.

Vienna is receiving thousands of activists from Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe to participate in the Linking Alternatives 2 People's Summit opposing the neoliberal free market plundering thrust of the Fourth EU-Latin America/Caribbean Summit, reported the Granma newspaper.

The alternative summit will take place throughout the plazas, academic centers and theatres of Vienna where the clamor of the people's demands for national sovereignty, self-determination and development will be heard. Participants will discuss crucial themes such as militarization and human rights, the unjust prevailing world economic order and Latin American and Caribbean integration.

Prior to the opening of the summits, Solidarity with Cuba gatherings are taking place in many Austrian cities. In the city of Linz, several young people and union workers gathered to show their support of Cuba and Venezuela and their efforts towards Latin American integration.

Aleida Guevara, the daughter of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara and member of the Cuban delegation at the alternative gathering, spoke during the demonstration about some of the advances that Cuba is making despite an ever tightening US blockade.
