Guatemala Vice President for Fidel Castro Health

Havana, October 27, 2006 .- Guatemalan Vice President Eduardo Stein wished a prompt recover for the Cuban Head of State, Fidel Castro, and affirmed in the name of President Oscar Berger that his improvement has been a source of great satisfaction in his country and other nations of the world.

Stein expressed his vows of wishes of well being for the Cuban president in an environment of affection and friendliness at the beginning of official talks on Thursday with the Island s Foreign Minister, Felipe Perez Roque.

Stein stressed the "enormous gratitude" towards the government and people of this country for its "significant and substantial support" offered to Guatemala in health, both with the sending of a medical brigade as well as the scholarships to form physicians here.

There are currently 670 young Guatemalan students in Cuba, of which 572 are studying medicine. There are also 41 young people preparing to be sports instructors or professors of the International School of Physical Education in this capital.

The Vice President expressed gratitude for the recent donation of an eye center in the northern region of San Cristóbal Alta Verapaz in Guatemala as part of Operation Miracle.

"This institution," he pointed out, "not only is proof of Cuba friendship and solidarity but also a strategic program of coverage for the historically most excluded and less attended that our country".

According to official figures, Operation Miracle has operated on 4,462 Guatemalans free of charge in Cuba and in the new ophthalmology center. (Cubaminrex-PL)
