President Fidel Castro Says Ties with Guyana will Continue to Increase

Havana, February 2 (RHC-AIN)--President Fidel Castro said that Cuba will increase its ties with Guyana during his meeting on Wednesday in Havana with that nation´s Head of State Bharrat Jagdeo.

We will work to expand relations and cooperation with Guyana, mainly in the field of health, said the Cuban leader during the official welcoming for President Jagdeo and his delegation at Havana's Revolution Palace.

The two leaders headed their respective delegations during the official talks, allowing for a revision of the already positive relations between that began when diplomatic ties were established on December 8, 1972.

Also present were Guyana's Minister of Public Service, Dr. Jennifer R.A. Westford and the General Director of Health Services, Dr. Bheri S. Ramsaran, both members of the South American nation's Parliament.

On the Cuban side attending the talks were: Jose Ramon Balaguer, Minister of Public Health, Marta Lomas, Minister of Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation, Government Minister Ricardo Cabrisas, as well as acting Foreign Minister Manuel Aguilera, among others.

The President of Guyana arrived to Cuba on Wednesday on a working visit
that will extend until Friday.

The current trip is Bharrat Jagdeo's fourth visit to the island. On October 2001, the leader of Guyana, which has a population of 751,000, carried out his first official visit to Cuba at the invitation of President Fidel Castro.

Bilateral cooperation is successfully advancing in the fields of health, agriculture and livestock, forestry, construction, foreign trade, culture, education and sports.

In addition, since 1993, Guyana has voted in favor of Cuba's annual resolution demanding an end to Washington´s 45-year economic blockade against the island at the United Nations General Assembly. Last year the vote was 182-4 in favor of the Cuban motion.
