Social Forum Tries EU Transnationals

Vienna, May 9, 2006. (Prensa Latina) The Permanent People´s Court, part of the Social Forum “Linking Alternatives 2” paralleling the EU-Latin American and Caribbean Summit, began a suit against European transnationals accused of human rights violations.

Issues of water, natural resources, agriculture, the food chain, financial systems and services, among other cases, involve nearly 40 transnationals.

More than one hundred social organizations from the two continents are sponsoring the forum, at which the PPC figures centrally.

The Court is a step in the long process to identify acceptable norms, suggest laws and regulations, and demand fulfilment of the existing regulations.

Linking Alternatives 2 is part of the broad popular mobilization that includes, among others, the Polycentric World Social Forum in Caracas in January 2006 and the European Social Forum in Athens in May 2006.

The fourth biennial Summit between political and economic leaders of Europe, Latin America, and Caribbean countries, represents the main political inter-governmental platform between both continents.
