Cuba Opens Three Regional Computer Science Faculties

CUBA, April 5, 2007.- Three new Information Technologies faculties were opened in Cuba on Wednesday as part of a strategy implemented by the Cuban Revolution to universalize higher education and promote knowledge in the field of computer sciences.

The new centers were open in Artemisa, Habana province (a territory surrounding the capital city), Ciego de Avila, in central Cuba and in eastern Manzanillo, Granma province. The new faculties are branches of Cuba's Computer Sciences University (UCI), located in the capital, and together form a network designed to prepare top level professionals.

Reyna Estrada, dean of the Manzanillo faculty, told ACN news that the branch in her municipality is provisional until the remodeling of a larger facility in Bayamo, the provincial capital, is completed. There, she said, the permanent eastern campus of the UCI will be installed.

The Ciego de Avila center of the UCI will welcome students from the provinces of Cienfuegos and Camaguey, while the Artemisa campus will serve the Western provinces. (Cubaminrex-Cuban News Agency)
