Cuban ambassador in Suriname attends opening of a policlinic where a Cuban doctor will work.

SURINAME, 23 April, 2007.- In the village of Dritabiki, in the Southeastern region of Suriname, a policlinic were a Cuban doctor will work was inaugurated on April 20, 2007. The doctor is a member of the Cuban Medical Brigade, that recently arrived in this South American country. The Cuban doctor will attend to 5.000 inhabitants of the interior.

At the opening ceremony were present the Cuban ambassador in Suriname Andrés González Garrido, Dr. Eddy Millán, Head of the Medical Brigade in Suriname and Dr. Alberto Balbuena Roldán, specialized in general and also traditional medicine, who will be stationed in the new policlinic and offer his services to the population of this area.

The Minister of Public Health of Suriname Dr. Celsius Waterberg thanked the Cubans for their presence in the country, and he expressed gratitude for the help that Cuba gives in health care and for the possibility that Suriname will be incorporated in the Integral Program of Health that Cuba offers.

Dritabiki is a village located in the district of Sipaliwini, in the Southeastern part of Suriname, some 400 kilometers from the capital, Paramaribo. The village can only be reached by river or by airplane. Dritabiki is the residence of Granman (tribal chief) Matodja Gazon. He is the leader of one of the Maroon tribes of Suriname and to his people he is known for his wisdom.

Gazon Matodja thanked the ambassador and the government of Cuba for the doctor that will be permanently stationed at Dritabiki and be of service to the population of the area. Within a few days Dr.Balbuena will be leaving for Dritabiki to start his work in the new policlinic.

In the delegation to the inauguration also participated Dra. Raquel Rodriguez, ophthalmologist, and Joseph Well, optometrist, both working in the Milagro Project. They used the occasion to check the eyes of more than 40 patients in the new policlinic. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Suriname)
