Iberoamerican Secretary General favors More Cooperation

CUBA, August 29, 2007.- Enrique Iglesias, Iberoamerican Secretary General, said here the regional project he conducts is a wonderful adventure that needs to be nourished with something more than statements and rhetoric.

We need to land in concrete things like cooperation and coparticipation in the solution of common problems, indicated Iglesias during a meeting this Wednesday with Cuban FM, Felipe Perez Roque.

Iglesias thanked Cuba´s head diplomat for the "opportunity to exchange for a couple of days on the big issues which concern us at the Iberoamerican Secretariat for the November summit in Santiago de Chile."

The Secretariat, he added, has "always had the support of the Cuban government" to revitalize the objectives defined bv the Heads of State and Government in their annual meetings.

He recalled that the main topic for this year´s summit is social cohesion, which he considered is a new way to look to development beyond income statistics and all it entails.

After confirming Cuba´s support to the 16 summits held to date, Perez Roque informed Iglesias on what the country is doing for social cohesion, central topic of the next meeting.

The Minister said Iglesias will be briefed on what Cuba has done in cooperation with Latin American countries in particular, but also for the rest of the world. Also, he will have an update on Cuban reality, its challenges and achievements, in spite of the economic difficulties imposed by an intensified trade, economic and financial blockade from the United States.

Enrique Iglesias arrived on Tuesday for a work visit, during which he will meet State and government officials and visit places of economic and social interest.

The 17th Iberoamerican Summit of Heads of State and Government Hill take place on November 8-10 in Chile, Ander the head topic "Social cohesion and social policies to achieve more inclusive societies in Iberoamerica." (Cubaminrex-PL)
