SURINAME, August 29, 2007.- The Agreement of Cooperation between the Ministries of Public Health of Cuba and Suriname was signed in Paramaribo by the ambassador of Cuba in Suriname Andrés González Garrido and the Minister of Public Health of Suriname Dr. Celsius Waterberg. With the signing of this Agreement Suriname became a participant in the Integral Program of Health that Cuba offers to 36 countries of the world. Since last April a Cuban Medical Brigade is in Suriname, and as part of this program offers medical aid to Surinamese. The Cuban doctors are specialists in general medicine, internal medicine, epidemiology, anesthesiology, pediatrics, radiology, urology, and pharmacology and are working in the interior and in medical centers and hospitals of Paramaribo, the capital of the country. In his speech the Cuban ambassador stated that the signing of this agreement constitutes an important step to further develop Cuban cooperation in Suriname, as well as to continue the successful relations between both countries. The Minister of Health expressed his gratitude to the government of Cuba and the Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro for the medical cooperation that Cuba offers Suriname. At the ceremony were present Doctor Martelise Eersel, Director of the Ministry of Public Health of Suriname and Doctor Eddy Millan Escalona, Head of Cuban Medical Brigade in Suriname.
