Venezuela and Cuba Collaborate on Labor and Social Security

CUBA, 27 February, 2007.- Developing collaboration mechanisms for training workers and labor leaders was the main topic of discussion among labor and social security ministers over the weekend as part of the Cuba-Venezuela joint intergovernmental commission meetings taking place in Havana.

Venezuelan Minister of Labor and Social Security Jose Ramon Rivero Gonzalez said President Hugo Chavez has called on the labor movement in his country to take a more active role in the process of change towards socialism.

"Our ministry has big responsibilities in the institutional transformations and in the new and more humane methods of leadership," said Rivero.

However, the official noted that for labor to assume that role, workers and leaders need training in productivity, socialist ethics and workplace mechanisms. "Only in that way will the transformations be efficient."

Cuban Minister of Labor and Social Security Alfredo Morales Cartaya said his country’s training system "is open to workers of both countries."

"We can summarize the main Cuban experiences during the years of revolution so you have them for reference; our specialists and training centers could also be of use," Morales told his Venezuelan counterpart.

During his visit to the island, the Venezuelan minister and his delegation will hold talks with the board of directors from the National Center for Training and Development, the Cuban Workers Federation, the Lazaro Pena Labor Leadership Training School, and with workers and labor representatives at different workplaces.
