CARICOM President Says Cuba Deserves Respect

CUBA, July 21,2007.- Barbadian Prime Minister Owen Arthur said that Cuba should be respected for what it is and be left to follow its own path without foreign criticism or interference. He made the comment during a meeting with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Arthur said that the world should realize that Cuba has the right to sovereignty, to choosing an alternative path of development without foreign interference.

Referring to the United State's policy towards Cuba, Owen Artur, who is also President of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), said that if Cuba were not to be considered as it is in fact part of the Caribbean region, this would diminish the importance of the Northern Hemisphere. He insisted that Cuba ought to be involved in all regional affairs.

Canadian Prime Minister Harper continued on to Haiti, the last leg of his Latin American tour that included Colombia, Chile and Barbados. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
