Cuba and Dominican Republic Join in Environmental Projects

CUBA , July 12, 2007.-   Cuba and the Dominican Republic recently signed an agreement for the preservation of the Caribbean biodiversity and to facilitate the exchange of experience in the treatment of scientific collections, environmental education and museum exhibitions.

The Dominican Natural History Museum and the Eastern Center of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (BIOECO) from Santiago de Cuba signed the collaboration deal that falls within the Caribbean Biological Corridor project.

Celeste Mir, director of the Dominican museum, and BIOECO's director Nicasio Vina, signed the agreement in Santo Domingo before the environmental ministers of the Dominican Republic , Cuba and Haiti , the three countries involved in the Biological Corridor.

Mir highlighted the role of both centers to foster the people's knowledge on nature and encourage environmental preservation.

Previously, on Wednesday, the Dominican Republic , Cuba and Haiti signed a joint statement to establish a Biological Corridor in the Caribbean , aimed at protecting the environment and human development. The corridor spans around 1,600 Kilometers including protected and non-protected natural areas in the three countries. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
