New Uruguayan Literature Program a Success

URUGUAY, July 10, 2007.- A literacy pilot plan using the Cuban method "Yo Si Puedo" (Yes, I Can) will wrap up Thursday with a graduation ceremony in the El Cerro Montevideo neighborhood.

During the last few weeks, over 100 functionally illiterate adults have received their certificates after three months of studies.

The results have been described as very encouraging and the program which has been re-baptized in Uruguay to pay tribute to national education reformer José Pedro Varela will be spread throughout the country.

Cuban expert from the Latin American and Caribbean Higher Pedagogical Institute Jorge Tamayo, in charge of implementing the program in that nation, said that nearly 169 people from the departments of Artigas, Cerro Largo, Canelones and Montevideo have already learned to read and write.

According to a census conducted among low-income sectors of the population, out of 3.4 million inhabitants, more than 30,000 people over 18 years of age are illiterate. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
