CUBA, August 15, 2007.- Guillermo Domínguez Hospital in the eastern Cuban province of Las Tunas, was incorporated into a United Nations Development Program project aimed at reducing the emission of ozone depleting substances. Lead by the UNDP, the project also incorporates the Canadian Environment Agency and several Cuban firms including Smart, a producer of refrigeration equipment. The Cuban Office of Ozone Technology is also involved. Ozone depletion has exposed many parts of the world to increased levels of harmful UV rays. UV rays normally filtered by the ozone layer can cause skin cancer in human beings, and also affect agriculture by altering seasonal cycles and reducing crop yields. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
