Nicaragua to Support Cuba at International Forums

NICARAGUA 26 March, 2007.- Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega announced in Managua that Nicaragua would give its total support to Cuba at all international forums, including the UN Human Rights Council and against the US blockade at the UN General Assembly.

Nicaragua will vote in favor of lifting the blockade on Cuba and for the human rights of the Cuban people to be respected, said Ortega upon receiving the new Cuban ambassador to Managua, Luis Hernandez Ojeda.

Ortega recalled that after his Sandinista party lost the 1990 elections, the following Nicaraguan governments seriously damaged bilateral ties with Cuba, despite the historic ties of friendship and cooperation that have always united the two peoples.

He said that over the past 16 years, Nicaragua went so far as to become an ally of the United States at the discredited UN Commission on Human Rights.

Ortega stressed that his government will work hard toward again strengthening bilateral ties with the Caribbean island, and noted that both nations are members of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), which promotes mutually beneficial exchange and solidarity.
