Cuba Vice President  Honors Allende, Chile Martyrs

CHILE , November 8, 2007.-  On his first activity in Chile , Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage paid tribute  to President Salvador Allende, revolutionary leader Gladys Marin and thousands of Chilean martyrs, victims of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship.

The head of the Cuban delegation to the 17th Ibero-American Summit, taking place in this capital, went to the Santiago cemetery to lay a wreath in the place where the remains of the former president were buried.

Lage, accompanied by ambassador Giraldo Mazola and others, expressed solidarity to leaders of the Communist Party, Guillermo Teillier and of the Socialist Party, Camilo Escalona, among others, as well as Carmen Paz, daughter of Allende.

He laid a flower offering at the grave of Gladys Marin, outstanding fighter and leader of the Chilean Communist Party deceased in 2005, and was welcomed by members of her family, political leaders and friends.

Lage also visited the tomb with the names of dozens of Chilean internationalist combatants who died for the release of Nicaragua and El Salvador , as well as against the Pinochet dictatorship.

The Cuban official offered flowers at the impressive mausoleum that contains the names of over 3,000 Chilean detainees, disappeared people and politicians executed during the military regime.

On Wednesday night, several Chilean political figures and academics, including President Michelle Bachelet"s mother Angelica Jeria, went to greet Lage in a reception at the Cuban embassy. (Cubaminrex-PL)
