SURINAME, October 3, 2007.- .The Cuban Medical Brigade is in Suriname since April 23 of this year. Twelve Members of this Brigade are offering medical assistance not only in hospitals in Paramaribo such as the Academic Hospital and the‘s Lands Hospital, but also in the Regional Hospital in Nickerie and the policlinic in Wageningen both in the coastal area, and policlinics in the interior. Doctors of the Brigade live and work in policlinics in the villages of Dritabiki and Djumu in the hinterland of Suriname, and in Wageningen in the coastal district of Nickerie. Medical assistance is given to children, pregnant women and adults. During the four months of their stay the Cuban doctors have given medical assistance and preventive care to the local communities. Up till now they have examined 5,585 patients in the policlinics and have examined 2,800 patients during house calls. Their work in the communities is not limited to medical consultations, but it includes giving information about disease prevention and a healthy lifestyle. Because the doctors live in the communities were they work, they are able to identify epidemiological factors that can cause diseases. Participating in the communities of Surinamese people in the interior and in Wageningen has been an informative experience for the Cuban doctors and for the people who live in these communities.
