Cuba-CARICOM Summit Starts Work

CUBA, December 8, 2008. Fourteen heads of government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) started analysis of a tight agenda in their third summit meeting.

The eve, Cuban President Raul Castro explained to the visitors trascendental events in Cuban history which sustain the heroic resistance of this people.

After paying tribute to Jose Marti at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery and to Antonio Maceo in the Revolution Plaza bearing his name, the president recalled that Maceo fell in combat 112 years ago when he was 51 years of age, for the island´s independence.

In the holographic exhibition at the base of the monument, the military deeds and long-reaching ideas of Maceo, were evident mainly during the invasion from East to West, said Raul Castro and emphasized the damage caused to the Cuban forces by their lack of unity.

When referring to the figure of Mariana Grajales, mother of the Maceo brothers, a family of combatants for the sovereignty, he said she was the Cuban most admired of all times.

The Cuban president also pointed to the historic coincidence of his death on December 7, 1896 and the birth on that same date, 38 years later, of Frank Pais, undisputable leader of the underground struggle in this city and pillar of the insurrectional triumph.

As one of the historic landmarks of the Revolution, he remembered the rebellion of this city on November 30, 1956, to support the arrival of the yacht Granma, led by Frank and supported decidedly by the people of Santiago.

He expressed that the experience gained and the lessons learned, the Revolution resisted for 50 years and is ready to keep doing it, despite the reckless pressure exerted by the blockade imposed by the US government and the impact of hurricanes. (Cubaminrex- PL)
