Cuban President Raul Castro is in Brazil for Latin American Summit

CUBA, December 16, 2008. Cuban President Raul Castro arrived in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, to participate at the Latin American and Caribbean Summit. Upon his arrival he extended his salutations to the Brazilian people.

“A hug to the Brazilian people, a hug to Brazil,” said Raul after climbing down the stairs of the plane that took him to that South American nation, Pl news agency reported.

The Cuban head of state and his delegation were welcomed by the head of the local Foreign Ministry’s ceremony committee Ruy Kasaes and the ambassadors to both countries Pedro Nuñez Mosquera, of Cuba and Bernadro Pericas, of Brazil.

The Latin American and Caribbean Summit will gather leaders from 33 regional countries and will focus of integration and development. The meeting will take place at the Costa de Sauipe beach resort.

Government leaders will consider today’s world problems, such as the current financial crisis, world trade, food prices, climate change and natural disasters without the interference by any foreign powers.

The principles of solidarity and cooperation will be underscored in the final document of the gathering. In that document, the heads of state will insist in the need to join efforts to face the global crisis, in tune with international law, favorable treatment of the most vulnerable economies and the rejection of unilateral measures, such as the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba.
