MALAYSIA, December 10, 2008. - “Let us defend all Human Rights for all”, Cuban Ambassador to Malaysia, H.E. Carlos Amores underlined on the occasion of the World Day of Human Rights and the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. “This is a date to reflect about the necessity to enhance international cooperation to guarantee the peaceful enjoyment of all human rights in all countries”, said the Ambassador, who recalled that all human rights are equally important, and indivisible, so the issue should not be used by foreign powers as an excuse to interfere the internal affairs of any country. “This politicization and the attempt by the United States and some western countries to impose a narrow view on Civil and Political Rights, led to the failure of the old United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC), transformed in a battle field between the west and developing countries. Cuba was also a victim of the political vendetta at the UNHRC”, said Amores. According to the diplomat, a new opportunity has arisen with the new Human Rights Council, where unilateral behaviors have been absent since its creation. Cuba defends the spirit of the Declaration, as well as the final Declaration of the World Summit on Human Rights of Vienna 1993, where it was clearly agreed upon the unity of all human rights. In December 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 62/219, as a result of the action of the Non-Aligned Movement, approving the institutional building of the Human Rights Council. All those who struggled for years, convinced that it was possible and indispensable to create a new body to replace the discredited Commission on Human Rights, finally saw the fruits of their patience and their serious and honest labor, stressed Amores. The Ambassador also quoted Cuban Foreign Minister H.E. Felipe Pérez Roque, in the High Level Segment of the Human Rights Council last March 3rd, when he said “The legitimacy of the Council will depend, to a great extent, on how the Universal Periodic Review Mechanism will end up functioning”. “It will not be enough that every country be subject to the new mechanism. The Council has to function under the strictest respect for the principles of objectivity, impartiality and non-selectivity. Otherwise, it will be a resounding failure”. But this or any other body will also fail if we cannot stop the unilateral practices in international relations. The illegal attacks by the United States on Iraq and Afghanistan, or by Israel to Lebanon, or the Palestinian territories, constitute a blatant violation of the Human Rights Declaration, Amores sentenced. The Ambassador also affirmed that the US financial, commercial and financial 50 years old embargo against Cuba qualifies as a crime of genocide and a massive violations of the Human Rights of the Cuban people. There are five Cuban political prisoners held in US prisons for the only crime of revealing the terrorist activities of the Cuban-American terrorist groups acting with impunity from US territory against Cuba, he added. Their rights to a fair trial, and to keep a fluid relation with their families are also being violated, he concluded. (Cubaminrex- Embacuba Malasia) |
