Paraguayan President Thanks Support of Cuban Government

CUBA, December 15, 2008. “Only on a few occasions has Paraguay acknowledged the great solidarity of the Cuban government and people, but we do it sincerely and not blushing,” said Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo on Sunday.

According to Granma news daily, Lugo was speaking during the inauguration of several facilitates that will serve to accommodate patients of the free eye-surgery program Operation Miracle in the municipality of Maria Auxiliadora, in the Paraguayan province of Hitapua.

During the ceremony, Lugo handed diplomas with his signature to the Cuban volunteers who are participating in this initiative for low-income people in Paraguay.

Afterwards, the Paraguayan leader toured the ophthalmological center in Maria Auxiliadora and spoke with patients who have undergone eye surgery recently and who are already enjoying the services of the new accommodation facilities.

For his part, the Cuban ambassador in Paraguay, Adolfo Curbelo, reiterated Cuba’s solidarity with the South American nation and recalled that, since the beginning of Operation Miracle in Paraguay, nearly 9,200 Paraguayans – including 5,700 in the ophthalmological center Maria Auxiliadora – have undergone surgery.
