In Suriname a meeting on Human Rights in Cuba

Suriname, December 11, 2008. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 10, 1948, the Cuban Embassy in Suriname organized a meeting dedicated to human rights in Cuba.

A special presentation of the documentary Facts, Not Words: Human Rights in Cuba was held at the Institute of Cooperation and Culture of the Venezuelan Embassy in Suriname on Wednesday December 10.

In her opening words Maribel Duarte González, second secretary of the Cuban Embassy, stated that the film Hechos, no palabras, Los derechos humanos en Cuba (Facts, Not Words: Human Rights in Cuba), by the Argentine producer Carolina Silvestre, is a tremendous display of admiration, respect and support for the island by a cinematographer who is a tireless defender of Cuba’s right to independence, sovereignty and self-determination.

Duarte González also said that in the 93-minute documentary, the Argentinean producer offers several testimonies of women and men who express their opinions about the blockade and human rights, and refute all of the US’ slander.

The Cuban Revolution and its people have been engaged in a difficult and continuous struggle against the United States over the last 50 years, remarked Duarte González.

In the activity were also present: Nerina Romero Leon, first secretary of the Cuban mission; Francisco Simancas, Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Suriname; Luis Carlos Alvarez, Director of the Institute of Culture and Cooperation of the Venezuelan Embassy in Suriname; staff of the Cuban, Venezuelan and Brazilian embassies in Suriname; members of the Friendship Association Suriname-Cuba, Surinamese students, intellectuals, teachers, and other Surinamese friends.
