Jamaican Prime Minister Shows Interest in Cuban Biotechnology

CUBA, May 8, 2008.  Jamaican Prime Minister Orette Bruce Golding and his accompanying delegation toured the Finlay Institute in Havana, the country’s leading biotechnological institute. The visiting prime minister expressed his admiration of the facility and his interest in importing some of the biotechnological products produced by Cuba and exported to some 70 countries.
The Jamaican delegation was received by the director of the Finlay Institute, Concepcion Campos, and Jose Miyar Barruecos, secretary of the Council of State.
Golding noted his country’s interest in acquiring the Heberprot-P medication used for diabetic foot ulcers, developed by specialists at the National Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center in collaboration with the National Institute of Angiology and Vascular Surgery.
The medicine accelerates the forming of scar tissue of injuries and in many cases avoids the need for amputation. It also reduces the number of surgeries and the appearance of complications such as gangrene.
The Jamaican Prime Minister said his country also wishes to acquire Melagenina, a natural medicine with a placenta base to combat vitiligo, a condition in which the pigment is lost from areas of the skin, causing whitish patches.
Another interest expressed by Golding is the anti-retroviral products made in Cuba for HIV/AIDS treatment, which have greatly improved the quality of life and life expectancy of patients.
Dr. Campa gave a detailed explanation on the work of the Finlay Institute that works a complete cycle and includes the process of research, production, marketing and post-sales services. The institute is a leader in vaccination production.

Prime Minister Golding also visited the University of Information Sciences (UCI). He concludes his visit to Cuba on Wednesday. ( Cubaminrex-  ACN)
