Suriname establishes Embassy in Cuba

Suriname. November 26, 2008. This week Ike Antonius, officer from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Suriname is leaving for Cuba to establish a Surinamese diplomatic mission on the island. The act to have a representative in person in Cuba is a result of the working visit that Minister Kraag-Keteldijk made to Cuba in august on invitation of her Cuban colleague Felipe Perez Roque.

During her visit the Surinamese Minister had a meeting with representatives of the Surinamese students in Cuba.

Jane Aarland – Nanhu, permanent secretary of Foreign Affairs, told the De Ware Tijd newspaper that the students indicated their need for a Surinamese representative on the island. “We are further intensifying the diplomatic relations with Cuba. With an embassy overthere things will go better and smoother, said Aarland.

The Surinamese representative who is leaving soon for Cuba must make the preparations to establish the diplomatic mission. 

Aarland – Nanhu stated that Suriname and Cuba have strengthened their relations in recent years. Especially in the medical and educational fields. Now a large number of Cuban doctors are in Suriname who primarily work in the interior.

She also said that many Surinamese also underwent eye surgery on the island. Now with the cooperation of the Cuban authorities these eye surgeries are now being done in Suriname.

Cuba and Surinamese established diplomatic relations in 1979.
Republic of Suriname gained its independence from Netherlands on November 25, 1975.

Since April 13, 2006 Cuban embassy was established in Suriname.
