Cuba,Mexico to Sign Migratory Memorandum

CUBA, October 20, 2008. The signing of a memorandum of understanding on migration matters is the most important part of Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque’s agenda this Monday on his visit to Mexico.

Perez Roque, in an interview at the Benito Juarez Chamber, after laying a floral wreath and signing the distinguished visitor’s book, highlighted the unrestricted respect of Cuba for the Mexican people’s auto determination.

The Cuban chancellor assured that Mexico has a special place in Cuba’s heart, where Cubans keep gratitude and a profound respect for the Mexican people.

About the Memorandum of Understanding on Migration, to be signed today, Perez Roque said: "It's an effort to prevent a phenomenon that neither the Mexican government nor the Cuban government is really responsible for because illegal migration from Cuba is artificially stimulated from the United States,"

He explained that both parties have collaborated to avoid the migratory situation to enter the US from worsening and to save Cuban lives, exposed to the greed of criminal mafias, encouraged by the Cuban Adjustment Act.

Perez Roque said his visit to Mexico was a sign of improved relations between the two countries, and that as a complement to the signing of the Memorandum they will issue a joint statement. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
