CUBA, October 2, 2008. A total of 235 municipalities out of Bolivia’s 327 have been declared as territories free from illiteracy thanks to an ongoing campaign using the Cuban literacy method ‘Yo si puedo’ (Yes, I Can). The director of the national program in Bolivia, Benito Ayma, told Prensa Latina news agency that this number is equivalent to 72% of the goal of the campaign, which they hope to successfully conclude next December. Ayma added that it is expected that 823,000 Bolivian adults will have learned to read and write thanks to this literacy campaign by next December. He noted that, thus far, more than 700,000 people have received their diplomas. Ayma announced that the departments of Santa Cruz and Pando will join Oruro in October as territories free from illiteracy. The official stressed that an important element of this program is the teaching of letters and numbers in the native languages (Aymara and Quechua), which will facilitate the post-literacy campaign in 2009.
