Social Summit Opens in Venezuela

VENEZUELA, September 24, 2008. Representatives from social movements, parliamentarians, researchers, and academics from several continents start Wednesday the Seventh Social Summit for the Latin American and Caribbean Union.

The event will be run until September 27, sponsored by the Latin American Parliament, the Social Cabinet, the Venezuelan Presidency and the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

In different working forums in the capital and other cities, participants in the summit will analyze terrorism as a problem for peace, as well as natural resources, sustainable development, and regional defense.

Also on the list is the strengthening of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our America, social movements in the region, and opening borders for financial flows, among other issues.

The seminar "Imperialism, Terrorism and International Organizations" is also included in the event's agenda.

Cuban National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon and Venezuelan Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel are to address the meeting.

The aim is to discuss how capitalism constantly uses violence and terrorism to achieve its purposes, Filinto Duran, vice president of the Venezuelan group of the Latin American Parliament, said recently. (Cubaminrex- PL)
