Granting Posada Carriles citizenship would be unlawful

CUBA, 22 November, 2006 .- Strengthening international cooperation in the fight against corruption, drug trafficking, terrorism and illegal trafficking in persons was the demand of more than 200 delegates from more than 20 countries at the 8th International Criminal Sciences Conference in Havana, where Juan Escalona Reguera, attorney general of Cuba, denounced the unlawful legal maneuvers used to try to obtain U.S. citizenship to the self-confessed assassin Luis Posada Carriles.

In this forum, which began on November 21 at the International Conference Center, Escalona referred to countless legal proceedings resorted to by Washington to not comply with the application from the Venezuelan government to extradite Posada Carriles to that country.

He also emphasized that the modalities of so-called transnational crimes are not linked solely to technological development, economic relations and tourism, but also living conditions that degrade human dignity and constitute determining factors for crime.

Escalona Reguera commented on the need to increase cooperation in order to deal with transnational crimes. (Cubaminrex -Granma International)
