Cuba Asks UN to Forward Official Protest against Posada Carriles

CUBA , May 18, 2007.- Cuba requested that the UN General Assembly and the Security Council circulate, among its member nations, an official declaration protesting the release of international terrorist Luis Posada Carriles.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Cuban ambassador Rodrigo Malmierca explains that a court in the United States dismissed all charges pending on the notorious terrorist and set him free, last May 8. Cuba holds the US administration responsible for such a ruling, which once again proves the double standard of Washington's self-proclaimed "War on Terror", reads the letter sent by the Cuban ambassador.

The document explains that the US decision to not certify Posada as a terrorist is a violation of the very US law by the government of that country and it also constitutes an open defiance of compromises adopted under international treaties.

Ambassador Malmierca reiterated that the release of Posada Carriles disregards the resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council. He made his most energetic condemnation of the new US maneuver, which he described as an insult against the Cuban people, against the relatives and victims of the 1976 terrorist action against a Cubana jetliner that claimed 73 innocent lives.

The Cuban diplomat asked the UN Secretary General to circulate the letter and its annex containing the declaration issued last May 9 by the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Cuba, as an official document of the 61st Session of the UN General Assembly.

The circulation of the document is in line with topics 66, 80 and 100 on the agenda of the current UN Session. Such topics respectively deal with the rights of nations to self-determination, the rule of law in the national and international scenarios and the measures to wipe out international terrorism.

Ambassador Malmierca also requested that the Cuban declaration be circulated as an official document of the UN Security Council. (Cubaminrex-ACN).
