CUBA, April 16, 2007.- Distinguished intellectuals from Europe, Latin America and the United States Monday declared against the protection granted by the US government to Luis Posada Carriles and demanded his indictment "on all the crimes committed". As hundreds of thousands have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, others detained and tortured in Abu Grahib and Guantanamano -they affirmed-, Washington grants protection to "the most notorious terrorist of the western hemisphere." US authorities are protecting a monster, a terrorist that is rewriting the record books, expressed Chilean journalist Manuel Cabieses. He recalled Posada Carriles´ participation in the assassination of Orlando Letelier, former FM of Chile under President Salvador Allende. To these crimes, must be added the plot to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro, in the University of Panama in the year 2000. In a document disclosed by Red de Redes "En Defensa de la Humanidad," more than 150 writers and artists demanded Venezuela request of extradition be heard and implemented. The document condemns US authorities attitude, under the pressure of "Cuban extremists groups located at the South of Florida." The list of signatories includes Danny Glover, Russell Banks, Alice Walker, James Petras, Noam Chomsky, James Cockcroft y Setsuko Ono (United States), Ariel Dorfman and Manuel Cabieses (Chile), Luisa Valenzuela (Argentina), Keit Ellis (Canada) and Gianni Vattimo (Italy), among others. The document highlights Posada Carriles links with the CIA, his participation in the blowing-up of a civil plane in Barbados, where 73 people died, his escape from Venezuelan prisons in 1985 and his links to the implementation to the so-called "genocide Condor Plan". In Peru, poet Winston Orrillo described as reprehensible that the US government pretends to accuse Posada Carriles only with minor charges of migratory offenses and false testimony. Bolivian film maker Jorge Sanjines also expressed his support to this international call demanding the indictment of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles. Posada Carriles is a murderer of people, he told Prensa Latina. His signature appears together with other 150 outstanding figures from all over the world. Sanjines denounced there is an evident determination of the US administration to protect this criminal, who is evidently aware of many private matters of the policy of US country. Likewise, he considered that even though we have no guarantee to succeed, given US government false nature, intellectual's actions might have a positive influence, or at least it will help to spread the issue all over the world.
