Letter from the Cuban Ambassador to Belize about the release of Luis Posada Carriles

Published by newspaper "Amandala"

April 2007

Dear Sir or Madam:

I call your attention to a critical event that took place yesterday: the liberation of Luis Posada Carriles, a dangerous terrorist.

Even the safety of Belize was at risk when in 2005, according to his own words; Posada Carriles entered illegally the country coming from Honduras , and later crossed the border with Mexico at Chetumal. We can not discard that the terrorist, now free, uses the same route to hide himself in Central America .

Posada Carriles is a Cuban born CIA-trained, author of multiple terrorist acts, including the bombing of the Cubana Airlines civilian airliner that killed 73 people on October 6, 1976. There is enough evidence to signaled Posada Carriles as the mastermind of the crime, including a declassified CIA document from 1976 that quotes Posada Carriles as saying, "We are going to hit a Cuban airplane."

Posada Carriles was a participant in one of the most abominable terrorist attack to Washington , only second to 9/11, when a bomb killed former Chilean Foreign Minister Orlando Letelier and his American associate Ronnie Moffitt in Sheridan Circle , at the heart of Washington D.C.

In a 1998 interview with The New York Times, Posada Carriles claimed responsibility for organizing a series of bombings aimed at Cuban hotels, department stores and other civilian targets during the summer of 1997.  These bombings killed an Italian tourist and injured 11 other people.

In November 2000, Posada Carriles was arrested in Panama for preparing a bomb to explode in the University of Panama 's Conference Hall, where President Fidel Castro was scheduled to deliver a speech and hundreds of people were expected to attend this event.  Posada Carriles was convicted in a Panamanian court only to be pardoned by Panamanian President Mireya Moscoso just days before she left office in August 2004.

Now Posada Carriles is released on bond in Miami , which means the US war on terror is a farce.

Cuba condemns the decision to release terrorist Luis Posada Carriles and singles out the US Government as the only one responsible for this act seeking to buy the silence of the terrorist on his crimes at the service of the CIA.

Best regards,

Eugenio Martínez
