Luis Posada Case Discredits US Judicial System

CUBA, May 8, 2007.- The release of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles demonstrates that the United States judicial system is heavily compromised to the interests of the Bush administration, denounced Cuba's National Jurists Guild and Law Professors from the University of Havana during a rally held at the Jose Marti Anti-imperialist Tribune in the capital.

"In total contradiction with its own laws and international treaties, the Bush government grants Posada Carriles impunity while maintaining imprisoned the Cuban Five, whose mission was precisely to stop terrorist actions against Cuba," said Law professor Rodolfo Davalos on Monday.

"International law states that terrorists are criminals eligible for extradition, but Washington protects Posada, and by doing so it discredits its own struggle against terrorism," said Camila Pena, the city of Havana's chief prosecutor and Yusmari Diaz, president of the University of Havana Law School Students Federation.

Similar arguments were voiced at the rally by Rufina Hernandez, the president of the Provincial Court of the City of Havana, and Lucia Perez Fernandez, director of the Center for the Professional Development of Lawyers.

The vice president of the Cuban Lawyers Association, Dr. Juan Mendoza, pointed out that instead of using the principle of penal opportunity in a case where evidence is plentiful, the US court system has brought shame on its nation.

The Anti-imperialist Tribune, which faces the US Interests Section along the Havana seawall drive, has been the scene of repeated calls for justice in the Posada case and the demand that the Cuban Five be released. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
