Posada Case Unmasks True Nature of US anti-Terrorism Policies

NICARAGUA , April 18, 2007.- — Former Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Miguel D’Escoto says the eventual release on bail of Luis Posada Carriles in the United States unmasks the true nature of the so called US anti-terrorist policy.

In an interview with Prensa Latina News Agency, D’Escoto said the case is comparable with that of Osama Bin Laden, who became a terrorist in Washington’s eyes starting the very moment he took his aim against those who taught him to be a terrorist. It is very simple; there are people for whom Posada Carriles’ crimes are not crimes since they were ordered by a country they admire, the United States, which makes this a case of state terrorism.

D’Escoto pointed out that the mastermind of the 1976 midair bombing of a Cuban airliner with 73 people on board and several other attacks against Cuba was also involved in Washington’s dirty war against the Sandinistas in the 1980s.

The former Nicaraguan official said it is shameful to watch the US justice system take a terrorist like Luis Posada Carriles to trial only for lying to immigration authorities on his entry into the US, instead of his real crimes. "This reminds me of Al Capone, who was sent to prison for tax evasion," he added.

Meanwhile, an online poll conducted by Florida’s El Nuevo Herald concluded that the majority of those polled favor keeping the notorious international terrorist in jail.

The survey presented two options, jail or bond. Of the 759 people who participated, 486 (64 percent) voted for jail, while the remaining 273 (36 percent) supported his release.

It is interesting to note that the poll was conducted by a media outlet based in the area where the terrorist relies on the support of ultra-rightwing Cuban American groups. (Cubaminrex-Granma)
