Venezuela Reiterates Extradition Request in Case of Terrorist Posada Carriles

CUBA, May 7, 2008. Attorney Jose Pertierra, who represents the Venezuelan government in the case against international and self- confessed terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, said on Tuesday that Caracas will continue demanding the extradition of the criminal who was released from prison by the US government a year ago after illegally entering US territory in 2005.

In an interview for the website www.Cubadebate.cu published on Wednesday by the Juventud Rebelde news daily, Pertierra announced that Venezuela will continue taking the case of Posada Carriles to all international forums such as the United Nations, the Organization of American States and others.

“By ignoring our extradition request, the United States is violating many international accords and regulations,” Pertierra noted, and added that there is a lot of discontent in the United States for the selective way in which Washington is implementing its so-called war on terror.

“While they torture some alleged terrorists, they protect others, like Posada Carriles, who has already been convicted for perpetrating terrorist crimes,” the lawyer stressed.

“We are asking the American people to tell their government that it has to respect international treaties and the US Constitution, and to demand the extradition of Posada Carriles to Caracas,” he added.

Luis Posada Carriles escaped from a Venezuelan prison after he was convicted for the mid-air bombing of a Cubana airliner in 1976 that killed all 73 people onboard. He has also confessed other crimes such as being the mastermind of a bomb campaign against Cuban hotels and restaurants in 1997 that left an Italian tourist dead and several people wounded.(Cubaminrex- ACN)
