Solidarity Brigade demands release of Five Cubans imprisoned in US

Havana, Aug 5 (Prensa Latina) The 11th Latin American and Caribbean Brigade of Voluntary Workers has demanded here the release of five Cubans currently serving unfairly harsh sentences in US prisons for fighting terrorism.

More than 300 brigade members from 10 countries doing agriculture work in the outskirts of Havana met with relatives of René González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Fernando González, the Cuban Five, as they are internationally known.

During the activity, Fernando’s wife, Rosa Aurora Freijanes, thanked the visitors´ support and their interest in the case, currently subject to a final decision by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.

Irma Sehwerert, Rene’s mother, called to use alternative media to break the wall of silence that has been shed on the Cuban Five by big US media.

The five had infiltrated ultra right terrorist groups based in Miami, which have been plotting and launching attacks against Cuban for many years.

They were detained in September 1998 and after 17 months of unjustified imprisonment, were charged with conspiracy to commit espionage and acting as unregistered agents at the service of a foreign government.

Gerardo is serving double life imprisonment and 15 years; Ramon, life imprisonment, plus 18 years of jail; Antonio, life imprisonment and 10 years; Fernando, 19 years of being deprived of his freedom; and Rene, 15 years of prison.

At present, there are over 200 committees of solidarity with the Cuban Five in 80 countries throughout the world.
