US-Based Solidarity Groups to Sponsor Debate on Cuban Five

New York, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) The US National Committee to Free the Cuban Five and the Puerto Rican-Latin American Studies Department at John Jay College, along with some solidarity organizations with Cuba, will sponsor a wide teach in on the case of the Cuban Five, unfairly imprisoned in US jails.

The teach in, scheduled for Saturday, November 20 at John Jay College, will provide in-depth a current information on the case, as well as discussion on how people can get involved in freeing the Cuban Five political prisoners.

Leonard Weinglass, attorney of Antonio Guerrero -one of the Cuban Five-, former US General Attorney Ramsey Clark, longtime human rights defenders and activists Linda Backiel, Anglican Priest and leader of the Latin@ Community Rev. Luis Barrios and Pastor for Peace founder Rev. Lucius Walker will address the meeting, giving an overview on the Cuban Five.

The activity will include workshops on the visa campaign to win invitation rights for the relatives of the Cuban Five, media relations, outreach, US-Cuba relations and updates on the legal case.

Also performing are US Bojah (bandleader of "spoken soul hop" fusion group Bojah and the Insurrection, who recently visited Cuba during the 9th Annual Hip-Hop Festival in Havana) and other hip-hop artists threatened by the US Department of Treasury for traveling to Cuba.

In 1998, the internationally known Cuban Five -Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and Fernando Gonzalez- were arrested in Florida for attempting to stop terrorist attacks on their beloved Cuba, and they are now serving tough sentences from 15 years to double life imprisonment in this country.

They are victims of a horrendous injustice that blatantly violates their human and civil rights.
