Peruvian Scholars Demand Freedom for Cuban Five CUBA , November 26, 2007.- A group of Peruvian scholars have joined their voices to the international claim for the freedom of the five antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in US prisons for over nine years. The open letter demanding the freedom of Fernando Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Gerardo Hernandez, internationally known as the Cuban Five, was signed by Peruvian poets, journalists and other personalities who criticized Bush's double standard on terrorism. The Five were detained in 1998 for infiltrating right-wing anti-Cuba organizations based in Florida to try to prevent terrorist actions against the island. The men were charged with espionage and punished with extremely harsh sentences despite the antiterrorist nature of their mission. In their letter, the signers noted that the Five have been victims of a biased judicial procedure which keeps them behind bars for crimes they have never committed. Poets Hildebrando Perez Grande, Marco Martos, Arturo Corcuera, Reinaldo Naranjo, Rossina Valcarcel and Winston Orrillo are among the signers of the letter. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
