US Lawyers Demand Release of Cuban Five CUBA, February 18, 2009.Representatives from the US National Lawyers Guild (NLG) expressed on Tuesday in Havana their solidarity with the five Cubans incarcerated for over ten years in US jails for trying to prevent terrorist acts against their country. During his presentation to participants in the 3rd International Meeting of Labor Relations Lawyers inaugurated on Monday at the Havana’s Hotel Nacional, NLG Labor and Employment Committee co-chair Dean Hubbard declared himself to be in favor of the immediate and unconditional release of the Cuban Five. Hubbard told the over 160 delegates attending the event that the NLG will not give up the fight until the Cuban Five are completely free and back home. Likewise, the US lawyer rejected the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade maintained by the United States against Cuba for almost five decades. Presiding over the inaugural ceremony were the deputy chief for Organization of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, Joaquin Bernal, the deputy minister of Labor and Employment from Ecuador, Tito Palma, and other leaders from Cuban organizations of lawyers and jurists. Labor Relations Lawyers from several nations will debate through Wednesday, issues related to the effects of the world economic crisis on labor and union representation, as well as the protection of the workers’ labor and social rights in view of the hardships caused by the crisis. The event also gathers jurists and labor representatives from Argentina, Colombia, Spain, England, Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica. Sponsoring this meeting are the American Association of Jurists and the Latin American Association of Labor Relations Lawyers, along with Cuba’s National Union of Jurists and the America Secretariat of the World Federation of Trade Unions.
