Havana, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) The five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly held in US prisons because of the US government’s hostile policy against Cuba must be immediately released, demanded Italian attorney Fabio Marcelli.
On behalf of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, Marcelli told Prensa Latina there was no reason for the Cuban Five to remain behind bars after the Appellate Court reversed their convictions, other than Miami anti-Cuban organizations political conditions on the White House.
A lot of people happily received that decision to revoke the trial against Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino and Rene Gonzalez by the Atlanta Court of Appeals, he said.
"I was witness to the irregularities committed in the 2004 Miami trial. Now the decision of Atlanta accepts the arguments by the defense attorneys about partiality and lack of guarantees. Their suffering must end at once," he maintained.
Marcelli noted that in another country they would already been free after seven years of prison and the judicial decision from the appeals court.
He also applauded the decision of the UN Human Rights Commission Working Committee on arbitrary arrests, and pointed out that the ties of the US administration with anti-Cuban organizations in Miami are now much stronger.
"The Cuban Five should be released, since there have been no judicial basis to hold them in prison except for political reasons since the first day they were arrested. Political reasons are the only reason they are indefinitely confined," he concluded.
