Peruvian Support for the Immediate Release of Cuban Five

Havana, Sept 13(AIN) Peruvian members of Congress and academics are among those that have signed an open letter addressed to the US Attorney General demanding the immediate release of the five Cuban anti terrorist fighters unjustly held in the US.

The announcement was made by the president of the Committee of Solidarity with the Cuban Five in Peru, Gustavo Espinoza, who added that he had sent a new message of hope to them when seven years of their arbitrary detention was commemorated.

Espinoza said that their continued imprisonment is an embarrassment to the US legal system and administration.

The head of the solidarity group in Peru recalled that it has been over a month since the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals of Atlanta announced the annulment of the sentences against the Cuban Five, but noted they are still being held in maximum security prisons.

"That is why," said the solidarity activist, "our committee is collecting signatures to send another letter to the US Attorney General, Alberto Gonzalez, demanding their immediate release."

Espinoza pointed out that among some of the personalities in the social, cultural and political life of the country that have signed the open letter are; Marco Martos, President of the Peruvian Language Academy, Poet Hildebrando Perez, and legislators Gloria Helfer and Javier Diez Canseco.
