Academic Conference on Cuba ends in Canada
CANADA, May 10, 2009. The academic conference on the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution closed Saturday after three days of debates on a wide variety of topics concerning the Cuban political system and the Caribbean island reality.
The event under the title "The Meaning of the Cuban Revolution 1959-2009: understanding the past and pondering the future" sessioned at Queens University, was closed today by the president of the National Assembly (parliament), Ricardo Alarcon.
The parliament leader considered discussions developed in a constructive atmosphere.
In his speech before the over 200 academicians of 14 countries attending the fórum, Alarcon extolled the achievements of the Revolution in education, health and the selfless cooperation offered to other peoples.
He discarded the impact of recent measures announced by the president of the United States, Barack Obama relative to Cuba, considering them insufficient, simply a setback to the times of preceding president George W. Bush.
Obama tried to make much noise about what simply is a partial return to the time prior to 2004, asserted Alarcon.
The academic debates covered from the Cuban economy, politics and government, international relations, cultura, racial and gender relations, sexuality, education and health including religión and the environment.
In the opinión of Josefina Vida, director of North America of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the conference was extraordinary.
There was an in-depth analysis of the Revolution achievements and the insatisfactions that we Cubans have relative to our country development, but always with the intention of perfecting this process, assured the official to Prensa Latina.
The event was organized by Queen University in this city on the Banks of Lake Ontario, together with the University of Havana and Chapel Hills University of North Carolina in the United States.
Parallel to the event a week of Cuban culture took place in Kingston, only Canadian city which is twinned with a city of the island, in this case with Cienfuegos.(Cubaminrex- PL)
