Cuban Yes I Can Literacy Teaching Method Applied in Canada

CANADA, May 8, 2009. — The Cuban Yes I Can literacy teaching method, of proven effectiveness in many countries, is also being used in Canada to fight against the functional illiteracy suffered by a portion of the local population.

Six Cuban consultants are assisting the project, baptized with the name of Arrowmight, in a pilot program carried out in three Canadian provinces: Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia.

The coordinator of the team of Caribbean experts, Matilde Patterson, explained that the program began in April 2007, when a diagnostic study of the country’s situation was made.

Marcia Krawll, who heads the project sponsored by New Zealand’s Aoteoroa Institute, believes that the number of Canadians who don’t know how to read and write or do so with a certain degree of difficulty is way beyond one million people. (Cubaminrex- Granma)
