Solidarity Message from the St. Lucia Labour Party to the Cuban Government and People on the occasion of the 52nd Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

The Cuban Revolution observes its 52nd anniversary at a crucial time in world history. But it’s also at a crucial time in Cuba’s own long and rich history.
This year marks 50 years of economic war against Cuba by the US, but it also marks 50 years of the Victory at the Bay of Pigs, which itself marked the first great military defeat of the mighty USA in Latin America and the Caribbean. This year also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the socialist character of the revolutionary process – a character that has been maintained for five decades through the best and worst of times.
This 52nd anniversary follows the major International Economic Crisis that affected Cuba even worse because of the US embargo, which has already cost Cuba over US $93 billion. It also follows climate change disasters – including three successive hurricanes -- that have cost Cuba US $20 billion. But it also comes at a time when Cuba is changing with the times and introducing new measures to fit these new times.
The country is witnessing internal changes from old ways that no longer work, to new ones that are already working. The workforce is being reorganized to improve efficiency, with workers guaranteed protection the socialist state. These and other changes can be seen and felt, whether one visits Cuba or not.
The leadership of President Raul Castro and the guidance of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro have combined to guide, with the Government and Party, the way to the future. But Cuban people have not been left out. Instead, it is they who are guiding the process. More and more  see the need for adjustment to new realities without dumping old values and are participating in debates on future policy. Through their community, mass and party organizations, they are contributing to their country’s future direction.
Three years of discussions across the country preceded the main document that will be discussed and approved by the delegates at the upcoming VI PCC Congress. It will be a document by the people for the people and from the people. The party will simply ratify it and the government will be guided by it. This is the essence of democracy – decisions by the majority for the good of all.
In all of these past 52 years, Cuba has not forgotten its Caribbean neighbours. Nor did we in the Caribbean forget Cuba. When the time was right the process of sealing mutual friendship and solidarity began, leading to today when Cuba and Caricom are one in the region and on the world stage.
The entire Caricom group at opposes the US blockade and each and every year at the United Nations votes to demand its lifting. The Caricom group strongly hopes that Washington soon starts talking and walking in the direction of discussing and deciding on the unconditional lifting of the blockade.
The St. Lucia Labour Party is proud of its historical relationship with the PCC, the Cuban Government and the Cuban people. We are proud too that Cuba has never once diminished on its support for St. Lucia in education, health, sports, culture and other areas. Cuba’s investment in the human resources that will build and guide our future will never be forgotten.
The SLP reaffirms its continuing solidarity with the Cuban people, its deep fraternal ties with the PCC and its continuing support for the policies of the Cuban government towards the people of St. Lucia, the Caribbean and the rest of the world.
The SLP has absolutely no doubt that the upcoming VI Congress of the PCC will chart the way for  even more changes towards an even more glorious future for Cuba, whose people have, these past five decades, for all of 50 years, stood with the revolution and its leaders, at all levels and at all times, always confident that their interests will always be foremost on their government and their party’s agenda.
The SLP takes this opportunity to convey to the PCC, through the Ambassador, our best wishes for the success of the upcoming crucial VI Congress.
The SLP also salutes the Government and People of Cuba on this 52nd anniversary of the Cuban revolution and extends best wishes to the Cuban Ambassador and family, as well as all the Cubans providing needed health and other services in St. Lucia for the rest of 2011.
Long Live the fraternal relations and solidarity between Cuba and St. Lucia.
