Solidarity with the Cuban Five Highlighted in Russia

CUBA, June 16, 2009.  The president of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP), Kenia Serrano, affirmed in Moscow that the media support in solidarity with the five Cubans unjustly imprisoned in the United States is of great importance.

While participating in a debate on the issue, attended by dozens of members of the Free the Five Committee in Russia, Serrano insisted on the need to spread the truth on their case, hidden by the transnational mass media, Prensa Latina news agency reports.

The ICAP President underlined that that's the reason why it's so important to insist on their innocence, by way of our own media, other media, and particularly by way of the Internet, in order to break the wall of silence imposed on the US public.

She explained that the procedure known as Friends of the Court (Amicus Curiae) was supported by 10 Nobel Prize winners who sent signed messages to the US Supreme Court, and it's important that the world knows this.

The Cuban official underlined that one of the signatories of the aforementioned document was Russian scientist Zhores Alfiorov, a Nobel Prize winner for Physics (2000), and recalled that there are new prominent people from around the world willing to join the demand for the release of Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino and Antonio Guerrero, internationally known as the Cuban Five.

Serrano, who is also the vice-president of the Commission for International Relations of the National Assembly of the People's Power (Parliament), stated that the Five are an example of the importance of the unity to win, even under the most adverse circumstances.

The Coordinator of the Free the Five Committee in Russia, Lena Loshkina, gave detailed information on the work carried out by the 20 committees officially registered in the Federation, as well as by many other groups, which have mobilized in support of the Cuban Five. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
