Cuban Youths Condemn US Supreme Court Decision on the Five
CUBA, June 18, 2009. Hundreds of young Cuban workers, leaders and members of the Young Communists’ League, students and members of the Jose Marti Pioneer Children’s Organization, gathered at the Mount of Flags of Havana’s Jose Marti Antimperialist Tribune on Thursday evening to condemn the decision of the US Supreme Court of not reviewing the case of the Cuban Five.
In her address to participants in the demonstration, Lianne Cruz, a 9th grade student from the Felix Varela Junior High School said, on behalf of all Cuban pioneer children, that all the members of her organization join the battle for the release of the antiterrorism fighters unjustly incarcerated in the United States.
She said that as long as there are terrorist groups constantly conceiving plans against Cuba there will be young people like Antonio, Rene, Gerardo, Ramon y Fernando, who have been deprived of living special moments with their wives and children, and called on all children from around the world to join the Cuban pioneer children in this demand. Also at the Mount of Flags, located across from the US Interests Section in Havana, Damaris Hodelin, from the Federation of High School Students, condemned, on behalf of all of its members, the aforementioned decision
of the US Supreme Court, in spite of the international support the case of the Cuban Five has received and the unprecedented number of Amicus Curiae briefs filed with the Court.
She pointed out that, throughout the years, history has demonstrated that ideas and truth can’t be hidden, in spite of the efforts of some people who intend to conceal them from the world. She added that the truth on the case of the Cuban Five has been increasingly growing, and that she was confident that it will reach the US people. Then, she said, they will also join the demand for the release of these five men, the only crime of whom was monitoring the activities of Miami-based terrorists groups to try to prevent criminal actions against their homeland.
She said that the Cuban students ratify their commitment of continuing the struggle for the release from prison of these Five Heroes of the Republic of Cuba, unjustly incarcerated in the United States since 1998. They will not celebrate Fathers’ Day with their families on Sunday. In fact, two of the Cuban Five have been deprived of the opportunity of knowing what the love of a child is, she stressed. Also addressing participants in this massive youth rally was Ricmar
Rodriguez, a worker from the Cuban Cigar Enterprise. In his speech, he said that the release from prison of these five honest men, whose work was at the service of not only the Cuban people but also the US people, is in the hands of US President Barack Obama. Their freedom –a condition that other US administrations have denied these heroes- is in your hands, he said, addressing the US head of state. We expect that, continued Rodriguez, you and your people will be able to
understand the grief of mothers, fathers, wives and children, who have been unjustly condemned to be away from their loved ones.
