Case of imprisoned Cuban Five in US termed historic
Prensa Latina

Havana, May 11.- US Attorney Leonard Weinglass declared that the case of the five Cubans, serving tough prison sentences in the United States for protecting Cuban and US citizens from terrorism, was "historic."

During the public audience to inform about the case of Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino and Fernando Gonzalez at the Havana Convention Center Monday night, the famous lawyer gave details about their Miami trial and the appeal presented in March at the Atlanta 11th Circuit Appellate Court.

Well-known for his defense of the Chicago 8, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Angela Davis and Jane Fonda, Weinglass pointed out that this case has all the ingredients to dominate US news, but this has not happened.

Ricardo Alarcón, speaker of the Cuban National Assembly, explained that the double morality with which Washington approaches the case makes it difficult (for US citizens) to learn about the case of the Five, who have been sentenced from 15 years to double life imprisonment "only and exclusively for acting against extreme rightwing Cuban terrorist groups in Miami that operate with total impunity."

The United States is governed by a group that not only ignores international law, but rides roughshod over the hopes for peace and unleashes war on the pretext of fighting terrorism, Alarcón concluded.
