Venezuelan Attorney General Supports Cause of the Cuban Five

CUBA, December 12, 2008. “The case of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters who remain as political prisoners in US jails is a flagrant violation of human rights,” said Dr. Luisa Ortega Diaz, Attorney General of Venezuela who is participating in the 9th International Meeting on Criminal Sciences 2008 that ends today in Havana.

In an exclusive interview with ACN, Ortega Diaz said that she has followed the process against Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero – internationally known as the Cuban Five – since the beginning and added that the sentences against them were unjust.

“All the basic principles of justice have been violated in this case,” she stressed.
During the meeting on criminal sciences, the Venezuelan official, who is also the President of the Iberoamerican Institute of Public Ministries, said that it is necessary to reach a consensus on law criteria at the international level to carry out easier and more expedite processes.

She also expressed her wish to reach an agreement for exchanges between the Cuban and Venezuelan attorney’s offices that can contribute to the strengthening of both ministries.(Cubaminrex- ACN)
