Cuban Parliament President Honors Leonard Weinglass

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 24 (acn) President of the Cuban Parliament Ricardo Alarcon said the history of the American people can not be written without mentioning the name of Leonard Weinglass, in a letter honoring the US lawyer on his death.

In the letter addressed: “For Lenny,” Alarcon de Quesada says during the last months of his life, Weinglass dedicated himself in body and soul to the preparation and presentation of the habeas corpus in favor of Gerardo Hernandez and Antonio Guerrero, two of the Cuban Five, even though he had been on a critically and painful condition since January.

Alarcon said before entering hospital to undergo surgery, the lawyer took the final steps in the appeals process of Gerardo and Antonio and delegated to other colleagues what they should do while he was undergoing treatment.

Alarcon noted that Weinglass devoted his life to fight legal battles in favor of workers unions, civil liberties and justice in the United States, and led an “endless and brilliant” career.

He mentioned one of Weinglass most recent endeavors was his collaboration with the defense team of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks.

“The history of the struggles of the American people can not be written without mentioning on every page, the name Leonard Weinglass,” he wrote and added: “now and always we shall owe him our homage and gratitude.”

Alarcon said the struggle for the freedom of the Cuban Five must continue and pointed out that it will be harder without Lenny.

“We must all multiply our commitment until our brothers are free. We must do so without intermission or rest. It is the least we can promise this resolute, self sacrificial and lucid man, who will for ever be our beloved comrade Leonard Weinglass.”

Alarcon de Quesada reportedly signed Thursday a book of condolences opened in Havana for the death of the US lawyer and civil rights activist at the headquarters of the Cuban Friendship Institute. (Cubaminrex-AIN)
