Tribute to Antonio Guerrero in Guatemala

CUBA, July 7, 2010.- Cuban participants in the literacy campaign in Guatemala paid tribute to Antonio Guerrero, one of the five Cuban antiterrorists unfairly imprisoned in the United States since1998.

The 5th meeting of these educators, held in the capital of the Central American nation, was dedicated to Guerrero, who devotes efforts to teach some of his inmates how to read and write.

During the meeting, it was known that over the last three years, more than 100,000 Guatemalans have learned how to read and write by way of the Cuban Yes I Can method and the support of 29 advisors from the Caribbean island, the Prensa Latina news agency reports.

These voluntary workers offer their services in the 22 departments of that nation, where over one million 600 thousand people are still illiterate.

Carlos Jacinto Coz, executive secretary of the National Literacy Commission (CONALFA), praised the Yes I Can program, which is contributing to help Guatemala get rid of illiteracy.

The Central American country has the goal of teaching 83,500 citizens how to read and write this year, and two municipalities have already been declared free of illiterates by UNESCO. In a few days, another municipality will achieve the same category. (Cubaminrex - ACN)
