Response Letter on the Cuban Five from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

HAVANA,  January 19, 2012.- United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights responded to a letter sent by Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, last november 22, 2011, concerning the situation of the Cuban Five, which included, also, the final declaration of the “VII International Colloquium for the Liberation of the Five Heroes and Against Terrorism”, celebrated in Holguín, Cuba, last November 16-19, 2011.

Excellency,

I would like to thank you for your letter of 22 november 2011, concerning the situation of the five Cuban nationals imprisoned in the United States of America, known as the “Cuban Five”, and for the final declaration of the “VII International Colloquium for the Liberation of the Five Heroes and Against Terrorism”, included.

A copy of your letter as well as the above-mentioned declaration have been transmitted to the relevant Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council that are following the case, and in particular to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions, for their immediate consideration and appropriate action.

OHCHR will continue to follow closely the situation of Mr. René González, ordered to serve his three-year probation in the United States of America, and that of the other four Cuban nationals that remain in prison as well. I will also continue to personally advocate with authorities of the United States of America on behalf of the wives of René González and Gerardo Hernández for them to be allowed to visit their spouses.
