Cuba Ratifies Priority of Literacy Teaching Project within ALBA
CUBA, June 24, 2009. Cuba ratified on Wednesday the priority the Grand National Literacy Teaching Project has as the basis for the educational development of the countries that are members of the Bolivarian Alternative for The Americas (ALBA).
Victoria Arencibia, who heads the Cuban delegation to the 2nd ALBA-Education Workshop that began today in Managua, Nicaragua, said that the literacy teaching project is a priority task and the main focus of the workshop, because it wouldn’t be possible to walk down the path toward development without having countries free of illiteracy and with full access to education, Prensa Latina news agency reports.
Arencibia, who coordinates the project, pointed out that they hope to declare Nicaragua free of that scourge in the near future, and that continuity will be given to the post-literacy process that has already started in Bolivia and Nicaragua. Cuba has helped Honduras in its literacy campaign and in the case of Dominica a diagnostic process to launch this campaign has been scheduled, she added.
Our country’s experience, pointed out Arencibia, has shown that it’s necessary to work not only in both directions but also to eliminate the causes of illiteracy.
Therefore, she underscored, the strengthening of basic education is important in terms of guaranteeing access to education and quality education, in order to prevent illiteracy from happening again.
In this regard, said the project’s coordinator, discussions on the training of teachers and health professionals, pre-grade training, master’s degrees, doctorates and on the training of university professionals, are among the priorities of this meeting.
For the Caribbean academician, to talk about quality education implies carrying out educational research work, which will allow for the identification of the problems limiting this aspect in our people’s education.
Arencibia announced, among Cuba’s proposals, the offer of the educational website Cuba Educa, in which important contents to favor communication between countries in the region can be found. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
